Inspired by Bill Martin Jr's Turning of the Year, this book of simple quatrains is specifically written for kindergarten or first grade students. The book is organized from September to August to follow the events of the school year. Use the special code in the back of the book to unlock the free journal templates on this site (under "Resources>Turning of the Year Journal Pages"). Students can work on their copying and handwriting skills by copying the poems onto the manuscript lines. Then they can draw a picture to illustrate the meaning of the poem, all skills that teachers are required to cover with their students. At the end of the year, the poems may be stapled together with the cover page to make a book which can be used as an assessment tool to evaluate progress through the year, as well as being a great keepsake to take home.
